Costa introduces a coffee shop vegan first

Costa, the U.Ks biggest food chain is now offering a vegan cake option. On the 7th of January Costa first offered the crumble bar, which is now available across 2,000 of its stores, costing only £1.70. It comes marked with the official vegan trademark making Costa the first coffee chain in the country to launch a product with the vegan society.

The crumble, made in the UK by Bells of Lazonby, consist of a cinnamon spiced biscuit base filled with a fruit jam and finished with a crumble topping. The family run bakery, based in the Lake District, worked closely with both Costa and the vegan society to ensure full compliance with the vegan society’s strict principles to allow the trademark to be displayed.

The decision to introduce a vegan snack was in response to customer feedback and social media comments indicating a rise in interest in vegan options. There has been a huge increase in demand of free-from products, not only is this bar entirely free from any animal products, it is also gluten-free.

More people than ever chose vegan last year, the popularity of the change is only expected to increase. Costa’s vegan addition to the menu shows awareness of customers increasingly compassionate choices.
