Various famous figures awarded honours in the New Years honours list
Barbara Windsor and Sian Phillips, two of Britain’s most well-known actors have been made dames in the New Year’s honours list.
On receiving the honour, Sian Phillips said it was ‘totally unexpected’. Phillips, who made her London debut in 1957 is now 82 and still has no plans to retire.
Barbara Windsor, who is best known for her roles in the Carry On films and as Peggy Mitchell in Eastenders said she was “Very honoured, proud and extremely humbled” to be receiving the honour.
Also topping the honours list this year is jockey AP McCoy, the 20 time champion jockey has been awarded a knighthood for his sporting achievements.
Other famous figures included in the honours are: Sports presenter Susan Barker (OBE), musician Damon Albarn (OBE) and actors Imelda Staunton (CBE), David Ogelowo and James Nesbitt (OBE’S).
A total of 1,196 people are on the New Year’s honours list, and over three quarters of the people on the list have undertaken work in their local community. The youngest person on the list is a 13-year-old cancer fundraiser.
