Not every obese person is a glutton
Genetics, slow metabolism and medication play crucial roles in the body weight of an individual.
The human body is a very complex and utterly beautiful living structure, no matter what shape or size it comes in. It is true that we have to lead a healthy lifestyle (balanced diets & exercise). But, not everyone is capable of attaining such fitness goals, due to various circumstances.
I am not trying to make an excuse for any group of people, neither am I trying to drum up a pity-party. I had a recent epiphany and it dawned on me that, really and truly we are all capable of making mistakes, but we all make different mistakes being that we are all unique.
Over eating is just like any problem known to man, I like to call it ”The cousin of Anorexia”. They are both different conditions that stretch the organs to the limit, making them work harder so as to keep the body alive.
For a person born with a slow metabolism, breaking down food is a very slow process. Even if such a person eats a normal portion of food, they still manage to store fat in the body.We have all heard about this and it’s not an excuse which was made up over night.
Genetics also plays a very important role in body weight. If your parents are overweight, there is a very high chance of you being overweight later in life. But genes alone do not dictate an individual’s future health and body weight. It is a combination of genes and a poor eating habit, but this can be remedied with exercise and a more controlled diet.
Several illnesses are managed by medications, some of these medications are life-long. There are chemicals in these drugs that causes hormonal imbalances, which results in obesity. Last night, I read about a man who broke his spinal cord and he was confined to a wheel-chair. His weight ballooned as time went by, due to being confined to one position for several hours at a time and the numerous medication which he was on. Sometimes he was left on his wheel-chair from dawn till dusk. He had to have a Gastric bypass surgery to save his life.
If you are one of those that wrinkle their nose at or ”roasts” an obese person at the club, in a KFC restaurant or on the train, do us all a favour and run along. People suffering with obesity need love and support, not another sterile mocking session.
Imagine an obese person with a history of depression is verbally abused because of his/her weight, this would have a negative impact on their self esteem, driving them further into a depression limbo.
Everyone should feel beautiful and good inside, regardless of what body size or shape one is endowed with. There are plus-size models these days and not everyone cares about a thigh gap or huge biceps.
