Yahtzee Crowshaw, of Zero Punctuation fame, has released a new game and you need to play it!

England is under attack from a mysterious malicious god and you are the only man who can save the country! Sounds good? What if I told you that it’s based on rogue-like games such as FTL and involves you finding clues to track down which of a series of different gods are attacking England? Well that’s pretty much Consuming Shadow in a nutshell. It’s also made by Yahtzee Crowshaw, the genius behind everyone’s favourite gaming review series Zero Punctuation.

Yahtzee has been a game developer for years with such titles as Poacher and The Chzo Mythos. Specialising in classic adventure game style games Yahtzee has managed to combine his speciality with the more modern rogue-like genre (and a little bit of his twisted humour) to create a game that is pretty fun to play and is definitely worth your time. However, although the core gameplay is solid and Yahtzee’s writing creates something pretty interesting to play Consuming Shadow does have its fair share of problems.

As happens with a lot of auteur developers the project reveals both the best and the worst of the creators abilities and Yahtzee’s visual aesthetic has never been his strong suit. The entire game looks a little bit like a flash game from ten years ago, which lets it down a little bit. The actual layout and mechanics are good so don’t let the visuals hold you back from playing the game. The only really damaging aspect of the game is the random aspect which can make some attempts impossible while others may feel a little easy.

It is also worth mentioning that although it is not directly offensive there are themes of violence that may be unsuitable for younger plays so it’s worth checking with an adult before downloading the game if your under fifteen. Consuming Shadow is a fun game made by a great creator would has some issues with visual design you can buy it now from the Humble Store for $9.99 and get both of Yahtzee’s Ebooks, Mogworld and Jam, for free. There is also a Steam green light page if you are interested taking your support that extra mile, or if you just want to praise Yahtzee for not just making a game about creating inventive swear words at the spread of an anxious rapper.
