Infinity Gems: The Mind Gem

Infinity Gems: The Mind Gem

Mind out for the Mind Gem!

Now it’s time for the Mind Gem, or the blue one on the gauntlet. These gems are starting to sound ridiculously powerful and unrivalled in their abilities. It’s no wonder heroes and villains alike have fought over them for decades.

The Mind Gem is very particular, boosting or granting telekinetic or telepathic skills, anything psionic in nature. You can see why it’s powerful by itself, especially if you’re a hero with psionic powers already, such as Jean Grey or Professor X. When combined with the other Infinity Gems, the Mind Gem allows the user to connect with all minds in existence at once, so it’s rather handy when trying to rule with an iron fist.

When the Illuminati divided the Infinity Gems between themselves, Charles Xavier received the Mind Gem. Representing the Mutant population, it was believed that Professor X saw things from a specific angle that others might easily overlook. Speaking on behalf of X-Men and Mutant kind, Charles could share information and general public feeling with the Illuminati to steer mankind to a particular goal. Upon his death in the comics (happens to the best of them, I’m afraid), Beast became the successor of the Mind Gem.

In the MCU, the Mind Gem came from Loki’s Sceptre. Not only did Loki use it in order to manipulate the Avengers into fighting one another, but it also housed Ultron.

If you skip to 2:04, you’ll notice Tony screw up his face and rub his eyes as if shaking off a thought that’s not his own. The whole point about this scene and its focus upon the sceptre is to emphasise and to demonstrate that there is something else at work here, something more powerful than them.

The Mind Gem also houses Ultron, which then manifests itself in the work that Tony and Bruce were doing when they were analysing the sceptre. Of course, this is the “particular door” that Strucker was knocking on in relation to the advanced robotics Stark saw in Sokovia in the starting scene.

Eventually, the Mind Gem is placed inside Vision, set upon his head. Although it’s not the Power Gem which could work as a source of constant power for machines, it is still an Infinity Gem and powerful enough in its own right. Although Vision doesn’t have telepathic abilities, he sort of has telekinetic skills (at least according to the Lego game anyway).
