Dubrovnik in a day

Dubrovnik in a day

The top activities to do during your visit in Dubrovnik.

I had never even heard of Dubrovnik before, nevermind know where this gem of a city was situated, but I sure am glad I was able to visit this place when I did. Loated in the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik is a popular tourist destination in south Croatia, particularly in the Summer. I stopped here every week with a cruise ship for six months for only a few hours at a time, and these were my favorite things to do whilst I was there.

Visit the City Walls

Perhaps the most well-known spot in Dubrovnik is its city walls and is definitely a must-see if you are in the area. The walls run approximately two kilometres around the city with breathtaking views of the adriatic Sea and the city, particularly the red roof houses. Although there is a payment fee to enter, the experience is definitely worth it. And if you are a Games of Thrones fan, you will be excited to be part of the experience that was filmed here, or you could even choose to partake in a walking tour and learn more about the filming that took place here.

Cableway

What better way is there to experience panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea than from 405m high in a cable car? The total ride is approximately four minutes, and once you are at the top, there is a local restaurant and the opportunity to purchase local souvenirs as well as great photo opportunities. Tickets can be purchased directly there in their local currency, the kuna. Exchange offices can be found around the city.

Visit the Old Town

When it was hot and sticky, my favourite thing to do was to join the locals and tourists, and purchase a double scoop icecream cone and walk along the streets and admire the ancient stone walls whilst licking melted icecream off my hand. With the appearance literally of an “old town”, there are many local stores to purchase souvenirs, clothing and local delicacies.

There are many restaurants and cafes in the old town, some close to the old town harbour where you can enjoy your meal with a view, and other hidden gems with fresh fish being a favourite.

Although there are many churches and cathedrals worth a visit in Dubrovnik, I was never fortunate enough to visit them. I guess I will have to return to Dubrovnik and spend more than just a day there.
