Cartoon Review: Will there ever be another Boondocks series?

It's loyal fans will watch it, if they will be pleased is another question.

The Boondocks is an American children/adult cartoon series created by Aaron McGruder, which first aired on Cartoon Network in November 2006. Throughout the duration of the cartoon being aired, the creator swam in controversy like a butterfly in a jar full of fresh nectar, because the cartoon content was far from being politically correct.

The creator refers to the characters in the cartoons as his fictional blood relatives. Why is that you may ask? It’s because he is now in his 40’s and he created the characters two decades ago in his college days. It features very interesting and almost real life characters. Huey and Riley are both brothers, but they are opposites to one another.

Huey Freeman is a revolutionary and deep thinker, with an immense vocabulary arsenal and thought provoking quotes ready at his disposal - you can call him the suburban Malcolm X. He holds the belief that the fictional government of his country don’t care about the poor and that the food produced are somehow laced with harmful chemicals. It would be an accurate description if one called Huey a hardcore conspiracy theorist.

Riley Freeman can be described as a Hip-hop gangster ”wannabe”. He sees the world as it is on the surface and he is never afraid to voice his opinion. Huey and Riley both live with their Grand-dad Robert Freeman, a former black civil rights movement leader. Robert is a good man but always falls prey to the slightest attention shown to him by any beautiful female. He and his grandsons love each other, but their occasional shenanigans makes him get in his pants.

Thomas Dubois is Mr Freeman’s black neighbor, who is a defense attorney and married to a white woman called Sarah. Although Tom and Sarah had a good marriage, it was very boring to Sarah due to Tom’s mild personality. This leads to Sarah obsessing over Usher, Barack Obama and pretty boy Flizzy. This unhealthy obsession always gets under the skin of Tom and he always vocalises his feelings which Sarah always discards sweetly. They have a daughter called Jasmine who is friends with Huey and Riley.

Jasmine Dubois is mixed race, from a comfortable background. She is depicted as being paranoid and overly naive about everything. She believes in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy, which is the cause of incessant ridicules from Riley Freeman.

Uncle Ruckus is a self-hating black man who believes that slavery was the greatest thing to happen to blacks. Ruckus moved to Woodcrest because he adored and loved White culture and society. He has a shabby appearance with one normal eye and a fake glass eye. He always claimed that he had ”Re-vitiligo” which he describes as the opposite of what happened to Michael Jackson. He aspires to go to ”White heaven”, at the end of his earthly life.

Aaron McGruder was involved in the first three seasons of the Boondocks, but he wasn’t involved in the fourth season, which resulted in poor ratings. I am not completely sure those involved with production would be keen to make a fifth season. To the fans, it lacks everything that first attracted them to the series, which is the original creator’s Midas touch and relatable story-lines. The boondocks without him, would be like the original Hebraic/Aramaic biblical texts without Yahshua in it.

it's always a pleasure to listen to interesting people, with real life experiences different from mine. I live in the city of London, which is a melting pot where you get to meet people from different walks of life.

  1. Off topic from the subject. Very informative about the show’s setting and the characters, but it didn’t answer any questions.
