Who’s excited for the next Pirates of the Caribbean?
Dead Men Tell No Tales finishes up filming and frankly I don't care, and neither should you.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales wrapped up filming on July 10th but will not be hitting screens until early 2017. This is kind of interesting to me, I mean if a big budget superhero film wrapped up filming around now we would probably expect to see it in the next few months. There’s only two reasons a company would delay releasing a film for so long: Either there’s going be be an insane amount of editing and special effects or they need a year to build up hype because no one wants this movie. I suspect the latter.
The first Pirates of the Caribbean was amazing, it felt like a fresh romp through the already well trodden pirate genre. The script was elegant and found a way to balance Johnny Depp’s performance with Orlando Bloom’s so that neither overstayed their welcome. Pirates of the Caribbean 2, I know it had some subtitle but it should have just be called ‘We Want More Of Ye Gold’, was okay. It felt fun and I think most people will agree that it’s still watchable, unfortunately it also set up the next one.
Pirates of the Caribbean 3: ‘At My Wits End’, which was ridiculous and is almost unwatchable. It’s tone is all over the place and most scenes serve as most ridiculous versions of previous set pieces, but I guess if you were a fan of the franchise you might still have gained a small amount of enjoyment from it.
Then there’s Pirates of the Caribbean 4: ‘On Borrowed Time’, I have to say I didn’t watch this film until I was stuck with it on a long haul flight. Apart from the ‘mermaid bit’ there is nothing that works about this film, Jack just seems overplayed and most of the interesting characters from the earlier ones had jumped ship and the few that were still had lost there individually and had turned into generic pirates. Pirates Of Caribbean Four killed the fan base and left a bad taste in everyone’s mouths.
So what will Pirates of the Caribbean Five: ‘Depp Can’t Get Any Other Roles’ bring to the table? I would suggest very little. The first film addressed the death of pirate culture so we are going to be faced with more contrived reasons why Jack Sparrow is still able to be Jack Sparrow.
Looking at the cast list it looks like Orlando Bloom is back for some easy money and practically everyone else is a new comer to the series. Maybe this is the end of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, so only one question remains, Why’s the rum gone?
