The illusion of perfection ruins our productivity
Baby steps do matter and they do add up on the long run.
As humans, we often wonder and focus on our weaknesses instead of focusing on our strengths. But what actually makes life very interesting is our individual uniqueness, our variable collective strengths and weaknesses. Sometime ago, I came to the conclusion that no mortal being can or would ever attain perfection, we can only try to attain that mark till we draw our last breath.
I think about society and the world at large as a giant system built with a myriad of colourful Lego bricks, we are all individual unique bricks and we have to find where we fit into - I will never be a Biologist or a chemical engineer, there is no need to feel sorry for me as I have accepted that reality. Those professions aren’t for me, but to a kid who just went on a school trip to an ultra-modern DNA lab after an oil rig field excursion, that is all he/she can think about.
When we decide to change, the most powerful obstacles that stands in our way is primarily our environment, our past and present circumstances as well. We all have certain things we wish to improve on, as no one is perfect. With that in mind, I feel like changing another person in any form or context is an almost impossible task by another human, I believe it takes a super-natural effect - what we refer to in secular culture as willpower, I refer to as the Super-natural effect. It registered in my mind that all we can do is, spread any valuable knowledge we possess without worrying about if and how it will be received.
Changing certain behaviors is not easy, but changing set behavior patterns is even more difficult. It not only drains you physically but it also empties you out mentally as well. Which makes change in whatever context, a daunting task. From an anecdotal point of view, I think we over exaggerate how much influence we have over another person when it comes to making a change - Just think about how many new year resolution attempts you have failed at.
When we embark on a quest to change because of friends, family or because it is what society demands. It will be almost impossible to see the whole process through because the motivation or drive is not intrinsic but rather extrinsic.
But If we decide to start a process of change, by weeding out unproductive behavior patterns and acknowledging each baby step we take without seeking out external validation and appreciating what ever growth we have accomplished, we can cut through the illusion of perfection which hangs over our eyes like the veil of a bride and enjoy life for what it really is.
