The Fringe: The largest arts festival is here

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is about to start. From the 7th of August the capital of Scotland celebrates the most important arts festival in the world.

Edinburgh is getting busier. Qualified as the largest arts festival in the Word, the Fringe is taking place for another August in the capital of Scotland. Surrounded by street performances, the visitors can enjoy more than 3000 events around the city. From the 7th to the 31st of this month it´s expected to host more than 600,000 visitors.

The Fringe started in 1947, when eight theatre groups arrived in the city to take part in a festival they had not been invited to. The purpose of that particular festival was to wake up the culture after the Second World War. Despite not being part of the official programme they continued with their own show on the “Fringe of the Festival”.

Nowadays, their example keeps growing. There are uncountable categories of shows but…what really makes the Fringe that special? After years of improvements and changes, the thing that is considered its soul is the experimental shows. It´s a huge event capable of taking in the most unusual performances.

It depends on your budget in regards to how you choose to enjoy Fringe. If you can afford to buy tickets you are going to be part of some of the most wonderful shows, but it doesn´t really matter because the street is also full of life. Pubs are open until five in the morning, instead of the usual three. The Royal Mile becomes a perfect summer stroll (if you have more than an hour to get through the people).

On a downside, the flight companies and the hotels raise their prices, so if you haven’t booked either yet you might have to wait another year as they’ve been overbooked for months.

If you are living close to Edinburgh it is your opportunity to live the amazing experience that those old theatre groups passed on to us.
