Five reasons to watch Adventure Time

Adventure Time has been running for half a decade and has brought joy to countless children and adults so why aren't you watching it?

I am a huge fan of Adventure Time, I have been since day one, but I have found that a lot of people I have talked to about the show haven’t seen it. This is mostly due to it being dismissed as a ‘kid’s show’ which may be because it airs on Cartoon Network and it appears child friendly.

However, when you dig a little deep you realise there is a lot more going on in the Land of Ooo. Adventure Time is a post-apocalyptic saga set after the ‘great mushroom war’ as science beings to lose it’s power in the world and magic starts to grow stronger again.

Interested? Good, here’s my top five reasons to watch Adventure Time:

Number Five: It’s on Netflix

If you haven’t got Netflix yet it is seriously worth it, it’s cheap and has enough great TV on it to last you a decade, including Adventure Time. Although it is quite easy to watch the series from many streaming sites Netflix is probably the best way to watch the series as it has the majority of episodes available to stream in HD. Also, as Adventure Time is only around eleven minuets an episode, it’s very easy to binge watch an entire series and if there is anywhere that is good for binge watching it is Netflix.

Number Four: Indulge your childish side

We all want escapism right? We all want adventures. Adventure Time in it’s simplest form is about a boy and his dog going on adventures in a world of fantasy and wonder. Each episode feels like a tour of a far off land filled with fun beings such as a horde of bears that party inside a gigantic monsters belly and a kingdom of living candy people. Like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, Adventure Times greatest strength is its simplicity and world building.

Number Three: Layers

Like I mentioned in my opening, there is a lot going on under the surface of Adventure Time. A general theme of Magic being treated like science and vice verse is present throughout the series and creates some both poignant and hilarious moments. There is also a degree of existential philosophy that arises out of Finn being the last human that is touching and makes him very relatable. Most episodes try to touch upon something a little deeper, even if it gets laughed off by the main characters, which will really get you thinking about the Land of Ooo.

Number Two: The Voices

See that guy in the picture there, his name is John DiMaggio and I can guarantee at some point you have heard his voice. He is known for voice acting Bender from Futurama and Jake the Dog from Adventure Time as well as around two hundred other characters. Joining DiMaggio on Adventure Time is Tom Kenny, of SpongeBob fame, and a whole host of amazing voice actors. The process Adventure Time uses for it’s voice acting involves all the actors being in the recording booth at the same time in an attempt at a more naturalistic approach to recording. This is not a unique technique but it does seem to give the series a special voice of its own that makes it a lot more watchable when compared with other cartoon series.

Number One: Anything can Happen

Finn the Human and Jake the Dog are the main characters of the series but only around three quarters of the episodes involve them. Adventure Time has a stack of episodes that are set around other events and side characters from the Land of Ooo. Whether it’s a story from just after the ‘great mushroom war’ involving Marceline the Vampire Queen and the Ice King or if it’s a series of interconnected stories presented in a Pulp Fiction style Adventure Time really has it all. Now go grab your friends go to some very distant lands!
