Should parents be fined or is it unfair?
So here is an article that I am sure that almost every person can relate to in some way! Holidays, but not just that, taking your child out of school so that they can go on a family holiday and have a fun time. It shouldn’t be a problem apart from the fact that most of the time it is. How many people are waking up to find fines from their child’s school because they have decided to take their child on holiday, in my opinion it is not on.
The government states that children should attend school regularly and only take time off when the case is unavoidable, they also go on to state that they are not preventing parents from taking their children on holiday. So why is there such an issue about this and what gives the school the right to send various invoices to parents when they take their child on holiday, because as long as a child is maintaining a high attendance percentage, then they should be allowed to enjoy some time away with their family.
The argument about school holidays is also put forward from people who think schools should have the right to send fines. However, I do have to sit here and wonder if they have actually taken their child on holiday in the school holidays and if so does money not matter to them because even though I do not have a child, when I want to go on holiday in the summer holidays the prices almost triple!
Now let me draw your attention to a couple of things, one father decided to take two of his children on holiday to Disney World in term time and when he got back he was fined £120 from one of his daughters school which is from what I have heard from various people is actually a small fine. He then decided to take the matter to court and would you believe it he won, he didn’t have to pay the fine and good on him.
Here is a quote from the man himself: “There is no loophole, the law just says your children must attend regularly. I had to prove nothing – they [the school] just had to prove my child’s attendance was not regular.”
A lot to take in isn’t it. Well let me leave you with one last thing, a petition. This petition who now has over 114k signatures wants it to be made law that an allowance of up to 2 weeks leave from school in term time is allowed for holidays and I say with most probably the agreement of many others that this should be allowed so please sign the petition which can be found below.
