5 reasons to be excited for Jessica Jones
Another hype train is firing up from Marvel and Netflix for Jessica Jones
This year has been choked full of great Marvel content, from Avengers: Age of Ultron to Agents of Shield, and there’s one last nugget of super hero goodness gearing up in the wings. Jessica Jones is the next series to come out of the alliance between Marvel and Netflix, the first one being Daredevil which came out earlier this year. I’ve been asking around and a lot comic book fans and non-fans alike don’t seem that interested in this series but personally I think it might just surprise everyone and here’s five reasons why:
Number Five: Did you see Daredevil?
Marvel have been doing very well recently at pairing up great creative teams with their super hero properties and nowhere was that more evident than with the Daredevil Netflix series. The same Netflix team are working on Jessica Jones. This gives me a lot of hope for the series as it looks like it has potential to be another grittier look at the under world of the Marvel Universe. If the Netflix team can make lightning strike twice we might be looking at another fantastic TV series.
Number Four: Jessica Jones is a really cool super heroine.
In the early two thousands comic book legend Brian Michael Bendis wrote for a series called Alias which was focused around Jessica Jones, a super heroine not good enough for the Avengers turned private eye. The storylines consisted mostly of Jessica dealing some of the more human aspects of super heroics. It didn’t take very long for the series to become a cult hit and that lead to Jessica Jones being part of the New Avengers series along side her husband Luke Cage. Bendis has been consulted on the Netflix series and it seems like a lot of the ideas from his immensely popular run on Alias will be finding their way onto the show.
Number Three: Luke Cage
Like I mentioned in number four, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones get married, this storyline is sure to make it into the series as Mike Colter has been cast as the hero for hire (that is one of Luke Cage’s nicknames). Luke Cage was a man convicted for a crime he didn’t commit, he was then offered time off his jail sentence if he would consent to medical testing. This gave Luke unbreakable skin and strength to rival heroes like the Hulk and the Thing, so he became a hero for hire, undertaking heroic jobs for a reasonable price. Luke is a pretty awesome character and a big part of the current Marvel Universe, he’s going to get his own Netflix series next year but his first appearance will be in Jessica Jones.
Number Two: Purple Man and Hellcat
David Tennant is joining the Marvel Universe. That’s right, the tenth and best Doctor is joining the world of super heroes, as a villain. This has been a quiet addition to the cast of Jessica Jones but it has been confirmed by multiple sources that David Tennant will be playing the mind controlling Purple Man. A classic villain from the comic books who has plagued both Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Along side Tennant will be Rachel Taylor, of Star Trek fame, taking on the role of Trish Walker, also known as Hellcat. Hellcat is a small time superhero who has worked with the Avengers on a number of occasions. Both actors are make amazing additions to he show and round out the cast into a stronger ensemble.
Number One: Krystan Ritter
There were a lot of amazing actors and actresses in Breaking Bad but one of my favourite performances came from Krystan Ritter. Since then she has appeared in several big series and her career is only climbing hire with Jessica Jones. I think if anyone has the ability to take on the feisty and fierce Jessica Jones Ritter is a sure bet. It’s also nice to know that one of Ritter’s characters is going to end up with a decent boyfriend. Yeah Jessie was okay but Luke would kick him to the curb.
