5 Reasons Roman Reigns needs to turn heel

World Wrestling Entertainment boss Vince McMahon seems hellbent on making Roman Reigns the baby face of the company. For those who are not familiar with the terminology it means that McMahon want Reigns to be the poster boy of WWE because he’s an ethnic minority and a bit of a pretty boy. The baby face is usually loved by the majority of the fans, holds the WWE title, and also holds the weight of the corporation on their shoulders.

The likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Bret Hart, Daniel Bryan and John Cena have been the chosen one in the past. But how does Roman Reigns compare to them? The truth is he doesn’t and recent events at last night’s Fastlane prove that. So rather than push Roman Reigns into the baby face role perhaps he should turn heel. Heel is what the wrestling business calls the bad guy. Here are five reasons Reigns would make a better heel than a baby face:

1. He already gets booed

The majority of fans don’t like him. They boo him when he makes an entrance. They boo him when he talks. They boo him when he fights. They boo him when he wins. For someone attempting to be baby face this is a huge fail, however for someone turning heel this is food and drink. WWE should utilise this and make a bad guy who is definitely not liked. A bad guy who is constantly booed is exactly what a story teller prays for when they sit down to write the tale between good and evil. Make Reigns the heel and he will be accepted as that character, continue down this current path of baby face and you will feel the backlash.

2. He has limited personality

Even though Roman Reigns has gone through the developmental process at WWE he still can’t talk on the microphone. Some would say he still can’t wrestle either. He seems to have a limited vocabulary and stumbles over his script. “Believe that” is the only thing you can associate him with and that feels forced because the rest of his chat is often meandering and forgetful. Nobody feels invested in his struggle against The Authority because he fails to engage the fans at every turn. Stone Cold is a great example of how to involve the fans to benefit you, especially whilst cutting a promo.

3. Fans feel he doesn’t deserve to be there

Fans know he comes from a failed American football background and has stumbled into the wrestling business, perhaps because of his family and Samoan roots. Nobody believed that he should have won the Royal Rumble 2014 and WWE writers even had to bring in his pretend cousin Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to endorse him in order to make the crowd like him. All this really did was alert people to the fact that Reigns has some historical family ties to WWE and Vince McMahon was clearly viewing him as the next poster boy, meaning he was being groomed as the chosen one.

4. WWE is too predictable

Wrestlemania 32 is now the next big pay-per-view in just over a months time, but it feels like everybody knows what the eventual outcome is going to be. The current WWE Heavyweight champion Triple H is supposed to be the heel as he is part of The Authority that keeps taking roman Reign’s title away from him. So to make Reigns ‘the guy’ it’s expected that he will beat Triple H on the biggest stage of them all. It will solidify the good vs evil storyline and make Reigns liked. The problem is Triple H is liked more than Reigns so this will surely backfire.

5. Dean Ambrose would make a better babyface

Reigns’ on screen best friend Dean Ambrose is getting all the cheers and is liked more by the fans. Ambrose has a charisma and likability that Reigns will never be able to muster, especially with the current brooding character he plays. It would be clever if WWE creative made Reigns turn against his best friend in a jealous rage, becoming heel and making Ambrose the stand alone baby face. That would create a story line with depth. Alas we may never see it.

    • John Cena had a huge appeal at the beginning. He also had the charisma and mic control of a face. Roman has nothing, but to be fair a lot of the roster lack that ability.
