VIDEO: Luis Suarez bites back to sink Manchester City

Last night saw the return of Luis Suarez to English soil after his big money move from Liverpool FC to Barcelona FC in the summer. The forward scored two goals at the Etihad for his new club to put the Catalan giants in the ascendency in the Champions League Second Round First Leg. Barcelona beat Manchester City 2-1 away to put them in the driving seat in the two-part tie.

Despite a great performance, footage in the 92nd minute appears to show Suarez biting out at Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis. It went unnoticed by the referee, but was this another contentious moment in the Uruguayan’s career?

The controversial striker has already been in hot water for similar incidents in last year’s World Cup and his final Premier League campaign. He also bit Otman Bakkal whilst leading the line at Ajax. Not to mention his racist war of words with Manchester United’s ex left back Patrice Evra. The man has previous.

Let’s have a look back at some of Suarez’s most formidable moments shall we?

This was huge. Huge because Suarez was accused of racially abusing – the ever graceful – Patrice Evra at a Premier League match between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield. The storm that ensued engulfed race relation debate in England – Suarez and John Terry becoming the epitome of ignorance. Liverpool received a backlash from the media for backing their man and Suarez received an 8 game ban and was fined £40,000. His defense claimed that this was just a mere misunderstanding, with language barrier being the main obstacle – a claim he still stands by. But it was hard to forgive him in the returning fixture where Count Suarez refused to shake Evra’s hand, as is custom pre-match practice. Bad form.

Luis Suarez’s appetite for human flesh has had him in a spot of bother on a number of occasions. None were more high profile than his assault on Giorgio Chiellini in the World Cup group game. As the Italian defender carried on about his business (you know, playing football), cameras caught they bitey Uruguayan take a chunk out of the Italian’s shoulder. Suarez received a 4 month ban but still contested the incident, play-acting, as if Chiellini had shoulder barger his tooth. Quality.

Ghana were moments away from being the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the Word Cup before Luiz Suarez played keeper, denying The Black Stars true legendary status. Yes he was sent off. And yes Ghana were awarded a penalty (which Asamoah Gyan missed), but that doesn’t change how wrong it was. What made it worse was even after being sent down the tunnel, Suarez reemerged to celebrate just as the penalty was missed.

Suarez, already known for diving, handballing, biting and racism decided that Branislav Ivanovic was to be his next victim in a hotly contested game at Anfield. Proving that he has a taste for various parts of the body, Suarez this time took a chunk out of the defender’s arm. He was given a 10 game ban (strangely more than the racist incident). By now his love for his opponent’s flesh was common knowledge.
