Remembering Resident Evil 20 years on

Resident Evil is 20 years old this month, Lets take a look back at the game that started it all.

This month the franchise that is Resident Evil will be 20 years old. I was 8 when Resident Evil first hit the playstation in 1996 and it truly terrified me as a child, Even though it was certificate 15 my parents bought it for me as a gift, and although it scared the hell out of me, it is still one of the best games I ever played as a kid.

The game introduces Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine as members of S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service). Players select one of the two as they search for their missing team mates on outskirts of Raccoon City, they eventually become trapped in an mansion crawling with zombies and other mutated monsters. The aim of the game is to uncover clues and solve puzzles.

Resident Evil was originally a remake of Capcom’s previous horror title called “Sweet Home” which was a RPG based on a movie with the same title. For the first 6 months of the game Shinji Mikami worked on Resident Evil all by himself, working on script, character designs and sketches and backgrounds.

Some of the backdrops for the mansion were inspired by the Overlook Hotel (The setting for Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining movie) Then later on down the line more staff worked on the game, This set of staff would eventually become Capcom Production Studio 4.

Resident Evil was also originally going to be a first person shoot-em-up but would later adapt to a more “Alone in the Dark” 3rd Person perspective. Mikami quoting about the first person system said that “technically…it wasn’t good enough”.

As a Horror title Resident Evil recieved critical success, as of 2016 all Resident Evil 1 Titles (original and remake) have sold over 11 million units.

5 moments from Resident Evil that were unforgettable

5. Zombie Bursting out the Wardrobe

Zombie bursting out wardrobe
When I first played this game I had no idea this was going to happen. You’re reading a diary in a creepy old room and BAM! Zombie in the wardrobe.

4. Thats not a dog flap

All quiet it seems, just taking a walk through the hallways of the mansion, when dogs decide to shit your day up.

3. Don’t open the door…ffs

open door
Barry did say don’t open the door, should of listened to him.

2. I think i’m being hunted

Cut scene to something making its way towards you… It’s this. No Thanks

1. What the hell are you?

The most memorable scene in the game, this is when you first encounter a Zombie, it decaptiates your team mate and then comes after you.

Resident Evil really has made a space in our hearts and filled it with terror, horror and action. Creating characters (and monsters) that we love and want to see more of. Recently Capcom has made decisions to make Resident Evil more action than horror, and its recently been announced that this year they are to re-release Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 for the PS4 and X-BOX 360.

Also, with great cheer from Resident Evil fans around the word Capcom also finally revealed that a Resident Evil 2 remake is being worked on, which is possibly one of the greatest things to have happened to the franchise.

All in All, Here’s to Capcom, for 20 years of absolute awesome zombie shooting, puzzle solving and running away from big ass scary monsters. Cheers!
