Initial reaction to Adele’s Hello

Initial reaction to Adele’s Hello

One of the most anticipated music releases of recent memory finally launched it's first steps yesterday, but what was it like?

“Hello, it’s me.”

The simple first lyrics of Adele’s new song could act as a casual greeting from her as she releases her first single since Skyfall in October 2012, and it turned the nation into uproar.

Rumours had started spreading earlier this year when the date of November 20th was seemingly put out by Billboard magazine, however there was little to suggest that this was yet another of the many circulating rumours that had been going for the last two years, and little was know what would come from it, especially as Adele maintained her notoriously (and refreshingly) reserved presence and stance on this.

But then last weekend, as covered on here, all speculation was put to rest when a teaser of her music was shown on an X Factor advert break and, after a subsequent social media breakdown from this short clip, details emerged of the new album ’25’ and the lead single from which the music was from, Hello, was released instantly yesterday.

The news of this pretty much shook the world and that week’s single releases were all coincidentally pushed back a week to save themselves the humility of being beaten by the incoming juggernaut. But what of the song, was it a new classic or playing on past glories?

You could say it’s a bit of both. It definitely has Adele’s trademark sound, and it may not please those that weren’t won over by her previous material, but as far as negatives go, even that doesn’t stretch far. Adele knows her sound and there is no one else quite representing the stripped back power ballad as well as she does (no matter how much Emeli Sande or Sam Smith may try), so it is not one that needs fixing, it’s not predictable, it’s just her sound.

Hello is extremely powerful, starting sombre and restrained eventually the chorus kicks in which shows she’s lost none of the severe emotional impact her voice has, the drums kick in and the song slowly builds into a powerful mid-tempo number with no need for any vocal gymnastics or lavish production to make it seem genuine.

The song would seem to fit in perfectly to the initial concept of 25 – making up with herself, making up with all the things she made mistakes with in the past. With this song allegedly being about making up with her estranged father, it is the perfect introduction to the album. The video is also breathtaking – filmed in sepia entirely, it is simple in it’s portrayal yet perfect for the song at hand.

So it’s good but how has the world reacted? Well the stats for the song Hello and 25 speak for themselves.

Whatever you think of her, she has truly triumphed and continues to keep the world at her feet at just 25 years old. Hits Daily Double reports that the song has broken digital sales records with over 400k sold across all platforms and over 100k digital preorders for 25.
