When google translates words and gets the wrong meaning

We have all been there, unable to talk the language and just fluff it until we get what we want, but this week Google took it a step further. A small town in the north-west of Spain, has been hosting a culinary festival to celebrate “Grelo”, the leafy green vegetable.

The town however, has been marketing something worlds apart and a festival most men may find interesting to say the least, after using Google translator to translate the Galician Grelo into Castilian Spanish they ended up inviting people to attend the “Clitoris Festival”.

“It was quite a surprise,” Montserrat García, the town’s spokeswoman, told the Guardian newspaper. “At first, we didn’t believe what we were seeing.”

Now the town had been advertising this for quite some time and with the festival held every February – normally it is advertised all year round – here is a slice of the advertisement: “The clitoris is one of the typical products of Galician cuisine. Since 1981 … the festival has made the clitoris one of the star products of its local gastronomy.”

Thankfully after Google was contacted, they soon changed the translation of the word and released this statement,

A Google spokesperson said: “Google Translate is an automatic translator – that is, it works without the intervention of human translators, using state-of-the-art technology instead. When Google Translate generates a translation, it looks for patterns in hundreds of millions of documents to help decide on the best translation for you.

“Since the translations are generated by machines, not all translation will be perfect and sometimes there will be mistakes or mistranslations. If people come across incorrect or inappropriate translations, they can let us know about them and we’ll be happy to fix them as soon as possible.”

Due to the confusion and despite the annual tradition since the name change it has been reported that the town has seen a decrease in men take part, could this be because they followed the wrong translation and couldn’t find the clitoris….Festival.
