Drink ‘Golden milk’ to strengthen your immune system

An ancient hot beverage with medicinal and healing properties.

‘Haldi Ka Doodh’ or golden milk is a hot beverage from South Asia. It has many benefits including: lowering blood sugar levels, lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, protecting against liver damage, detoxing the liver and purifying the blood and strengthening the immune system. Drink this and your body will be thanking you I assure you.

Ingredients for golden milk for one person:
-1 cup of milk (Any type of milk such as almond, soya, goats or milk etc.)
-1/4 tsp of turmeric powder
-A cinnamon stick that is roughly 2cm in length
-A tsp of freshly grated ginger
-A tsp of honey

Cooking method

Place all the ingredients in a saucepan, place over a low heat on the hob and stir, just for 10 seconds. Allow for the milk to simmer for 10-15 minutes but check on it every 5 minutes otherwise it might rise and spill (yes I am speaking from experience). After 10-15 minutes, the colour should be a golden yellow, it might be very intense and bits of cinnamon may have risen to the top. Turn off the heat and stir and pour into a cup and enjoy. Add more honey if you want. There will be chunks of ginger in your cup, I tend to eat this but you do not have to if it is too strong to tolerate. Bear in mind that the drink is an acquired taste, similar to that of green tea. I personally drink ‘golden milk’ once or twice a week. Although when I am ill I will drink it every other day. I usually make this for my myself, my sister and mother and just add 2 cups of milk, 1/2 a tsp of turmeric and more honey.

Turmeric powder is used in many Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi curry dishes and cuisines, as well as in face masks.
